Group of friendship with Nagorno-Karabakh formed at Lithuanian Seimas

  At its meeting on Thursday, the Seimas of Lithuania official announced the creation of a group of friendship with the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR).

First Deputy Speaker arty Vytautas Gapsys read out a relevant and invited the MPs wishing to join, and announced the date of the group’s first meeting.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Azubalis said creation of the group affects Lithuania’s official foreign policy.

“What you have just read runs counter to the recommendations of the Seimas Board, the Charter and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Seimas establishes parliamentary friendship groups with the countries which have received international recognition. In this case, such a group cannot be created in the Seimas,” he said. Mr Azubalis noted that Lithuania is thus becoming a platform for political games and conflict of ethnic minorities in the Caucasus.

One of the founders of the group Dangute Mikutiene said in response that other groups of friendship are formed in the Seimas with unrecognized regions.

“Lithuania is a democratic state, and Seimas members have a mandate to be friends with parliaments of other countries, even if they are not officially recognized,” she said.
